More gestural studies incorporating info from Hampton's figure drawing book (poses and funny hat are not from the book ;)), with particular attention to the rhythm of the spine.

Photoshop CS6, Intuos 5 with art pen.

This is truly inspiring. Love the flow of motion in these figure drawings! I am quite a newbie when it comes to drawing poses, and I believe I could really benefit from trying this style out, since I have a bad habit of focusing on details rather than the whole picture.

Thanks for the encouragement; I'm just starting out myself. The portraits in your gallery are great; how did you achieve such a good grasp of value in rendering?

Thank you :) In general I try to avoid thinking of face as consisting of lines, and focus more on shadows, when I draw portraits. It's easy to think in terms of "now I'm drawing the mouth, and now the eyes" etc. but I have had greater success just looking at how the face is shaded, and draw those shades.

I don't know if that made any sense :)

Thanks for explaining. 8-) That makes sense, but how do you place the shades in the right place and make them the right shape without using lines to delimit the area?

This depends on whether I am doing a "finished piece" or if I am just practicing. If I am making a piece that is supposed to be as good as possible, I normally either use a square grid to get the proportions right, or (even simpler, I have found out) place the paper on the screen in front of the reference photo. The photo will shine through the paper, and makes it easy to get down a rough sketch (still using shades, not lines) where things are in the right place.

When I am practicing, taking such shortcuts kind of works against the purpose of the practice session, and therefore I try to measure by eye, accepting that things might get out of proportions sometimes.

Good to know. Though sometimes it's hard to resist the perfectionistic urge even when practicing, heh.

Your gallery is mad, bro. You seem to do lots of pieces from memory; what's the trick to remembering the figure in such detail?
